Tikhvin

Description

The town of Tikhvin is located in the Leningrad Region, 215 km east of St. Petersburg. It is an industrial and cultural center, as well as a rail transportation hub. The settlement was first mentioned in 1383 (under the name Predtechenskii Pogost), then in 1507 when prince Vasilii III of Moscow funded the construction of the Cathedral of Dormition. In 1560 when Ivan the Terrible ordered the construction of the Monastery of Dormition, site of the famous Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. In the 17th century, the town was captured and ransacked by the Swedes, during the Swedish-Polish Incursion. It was occupied in WWII (1941) by German troops but soon retaken by the Red Army. Many monuments were damaged during the Soviet period.
