A letter from William to his wife Caroline writing from Barries Landing on the way to Port Hudson. William writes that he has full confidence in General Banks. He writes that General Grant has come below Vicksburg with 36,000 men, 700 cavalry captured 600 prisoners and destroyed two trains on the Jacksonville Railroad. "I think we shall probably stay here until the cotton is all brought in and then I think we shall move on. The darkeys are coming in very fast and going down the river. Two hundred came in last night that are going to NO to enlist."
