A letter from William to his wife Caroline commenting on the news of his sister's death. William discusses a trip on a river steamer to search for sugar and recounts a conversation with a store owner who tried to justify slavery: "He thinks that the blacks are better off than they could be in any other place for here they are taken care of in old age & have no cares at all. I think it would be well for him to try it for a spell first before he preaches it a great deal."
