A letter from Lansing Porter to his wife, Elizabeth, informing her that his regiment is back in Thibodeaux, but he has followed Simon to New Orleans for business. Lansing explains how he and Simon both attend church, share a room, and write similar letters to their women of interest. Lansing writes about a few good men in his regiment that have been killed on the "Cotton." He also writes that he was put to the most fearful charge of commanding the two regiments to "cover" the retreat, and that he luckily made it out unscathed.
