There were two phases to this study. Phase I determined the socio-demographic and clinical characteristics associated with substance use in HIV-infected patients at a public HIV Clinic. This phase of the study also examined the attitudes HIV-infected alcohol and/or drug (AOD) users have towards AOD use. A convenience sample of 300 HIV infected adults completed an anonymous survey on AOD use while waiting for their clinic appointment at the HIV Outpatient Program Clinic (HOP). Logistic regression was used in the analysis The sample's socio-demographic characteristics included African-American (51%), male (64%), >30 years (82%), and unemployed (67%). Logistic regression showed that associating with others who use drugs was significantly associated with AOD use (OR 10.90/CI = 5.10, 23.34), as well as hospitalization for a mental illness (OR 4.51/CI = 1.54, 13.33) The second phase was based on the results from Phase 1, which showed that 74 percent, especially AOD users were interested in learning about humor as a treatment approach. The purpose of Phase 2 was to determine if the intervention was feasible and acceptable for HIV-infected patients The study sample included HOP patients who attended a Christmas Party where the intervention took place. The study design was a convenience sample of the first thirty HIV-infected adults who agreed to participate in the humor intervention. Results from an anonymous survey showed that the majority of the sample highly approved of the intervention, 'Join the Laugh Track'. The majority was black and 52 percent had been in a 12-step program for AOD use A skit with puppets and Mr. T-Cell, Humor Me, Mister T, helped to raise awareness about the benefits of humor. The majority planned to use humor to reduce stress, 17 percent to deal with 'taking drugs.' The majority of the patients also planned to use the intervention's humorous props as reminders to use humor and take their medicine. All reported that having a sense of humor had helped them survive, and 92 percent were interested in learning more about humor
