Sponsored by Congress of Racial Equality, Manhattan Branch of the NAACP, Negro American Labor Council, Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the gathering was planned to include comments by James Baldwin, Rev. Thomas Kilgore Jr., Bayard Rustin, and Norman Thomas.
