Jefferson Davis is pictured fleeing from the artillery fire. The names of Confederate generals such as Bragg and Beauregard appear over the "house of disunion". A palmetto log is also depicted.

The palmetto log is probably a reference to Fort Moultrie, a South Carolina fort that was loyal to the Confederacy, and originally constructed of palmetto logs. South Carolina's nickname, the Palmetto state, derives its name from Fort Moultrie. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union and the site of the battle of Fort Sumter, the first battle of the Civil War.
