Butler, Benjamin F. (Benjamin Franklin), 1818-1893
Butler was military commander of the city of New Orleans until December 16, 1862. After the Civil War he became governor of Massachusetts and was later elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. The quote was well-known during the Civil War and denoted Union patriotism.
