Note

Charles Blondin (February 28, 1824 - February 19, 1897), born Jean Franois Gravelet, was a popular French tight-rope walker and acrobat known for his many tightrope crosses over Niagara Falls. The man holding the ax over the tightrope shows the Union's faith in defeating the folly of secession.
