United States
Butler was a prominent Union general perhaps most noted for his leadership in the Battle of Fort Hatteras and the capture of New Orleans, where he was military commander until December 16, 1862. After the Civil War he became governor of Massachusetts and was later elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
