'A New Way to Pay Old Debts' is an English Renaissance drama written by Philip Massinger in 1625. The play highlights the tension of class conflicts. This postal cover refers to class conflict between the former Southern slave owners and Northern business men. The image includes a Southern man holding a gun and a cat-o-nine tails whip pointed at the Northern man. Slaves are working in the background while an overseer watches them while holding a whip.
