Fort Pickens was a United States military fort located on Santa Rosa Island near Pensacola, Florida. On January 8th, 1861, Lieutenant Adam J. Slemmer, in charge of the United States force, prevented a group of men from capturing the fort. Fort Pickens remained in Union control for the duration of the Civil War. The image mocks the rebels who tried to take the Fort.
