During social protests, such as the 2017 women's rights protest or the 2015 climate marches, occult motifs from fictional works of popular culture, such as the witch or the Game of Thrones white walkers, pervade protesters' slogans and signs. This dissertation then aims to identify why the theme of the occult has a privileged relationship with social justice. It traces the evolution of the occult in French society from the nineteenth century, the turning point of our modern era, to the present day. The analysis is based on literary works of fiction in various formats, such as books, films, television series, and video games. It shows the ambivalence of the occult, which has adapted to important cultural and societal changes without becoming obsolete or outdated, to be a carrier, if not a symbol of social struggle.
