Dr. Colomb wrote and submitted to the Curtis Publishing Company for consideration a biographical sketch of a former family slave named Jim Smith who, after emancipation, continued to live and work on the Colomb plantation in Saint James Parish, for some fifty years, until his death. The snapshot showed Smith working in the fields at about age seventy-five. [Evidently the publishers returned the material to the author unused.
