1959-Tulane v Wake Forest
- [silence]
Description
Color footage without sound of a football game between Tulane and Wake Forest, played in Tulane Stadium, New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 3, 1959. Final Score: Tulane 6, Wake Forest 0. Synopsis: Coached by Andy Pilney, the Green Wave had lost its first two games of the season, so were hoping to turn things around against the Deacons. Things look good for Tulane when freshman running back Terry Terrebonne breaks free early in the first quarter and seems to be headed towards the end zone unimpeded. However, a referee ends up in his path and he goes down at the 49 yard line (2:00). Quarterback Phil Nugent gets off a 26-yard run to keep the drive going, but his pass two plays later is intercepted by Deacon Winston Futch at the eight yard line to kill the drive. The Deacons do nothing with their possession, kicking it back to Tulane at their 28 yard line. Terrebonne gets the ball (5:15), runs about 10 yards, fumbles the ball forward another 10 feet beyond him, and the players advance it as they try to corral it. Eventually the Deacons land on it on their own 42 yard line; Terrebonne is given credit for a 30 yard pick-up and a fumble. With still no score in the game, Tulane has yet another opportunity late in the first quarter to go down the field. Another freshman back, Tommy Mason (#20), a year away from becoming an All-American and playing with a leg injury, is given the ball. He gains a few yards before the ball is knocked loose and the Deacons recover. The second quarter is more of the same back-and- forth, with no scoring. In the first half, the Wave amasses 164 rushing yards to Wake Forest's 40; they gained 41 passing yards on five completions, to no Deacon completions (17:30). Tulane finally engineers a scoring drive scores in the third quarter, after the Deacons muff a punt (18:50). Recovering the ball on the 24-yard line, the Greenies drive it forward almost to the goal line, only to fumble it away (20:00). However, the Deacons recover and immediately punt it out of their end zone. Tommy Mason receives the punt (20:25) and brings it back to the 24, and on the third-down play, fullback Tom McClellan runs up the middle for the touchdown (21:20). The point-after attempt fails. With Tulane finally scoring, Wake Forest seems to awaken and it drives down the field with a purpose, getting all the way down the field (24:12). The Greenies put up a ferocious goal line defense to keep the Deacons from scoring (24:20). Taking possession of the football on the 1-foot line, they immediately kick the ball away to put the Deacons back on the 35 yard line. The ball changes possession again as the clock winds down from the third to the fourth quarter.
