1931-Tulane Newcomb Footage
- [silence]
Description
Surviving footage of a black and white film without sound of the first day of classes for Newcomb College students on Sept. 24, 1930, and another unknown event. This film records the annual rite of Newcomb College seniors going to chapel on the first day of classes of their senior year. The film opens with a brief glimpse of Angela Gregory (Newcomb B.A. 1925) talking to Ellsworth Woodward, director of the Newcomb School of Art, and his wife, standing in front of Dixon Hall. The film then shows Newcomb undergraduates perched on the ledge in front of the doors watching the spectators file inside. Among those entering are: (:22) Ellsworth Woodward; (:40) Clara Gregory Baer, Newcomb's director of Physical Education, who invented the game "Newcomb" and authored the first set of published rules for women's basketball; and (:45) Pierce Butler, dean of Newcomb College. The procession of seniors down Newcomb Circle to chapel in Dixon Hall then follows (1:17). The women are led in by their child mascot, Miss Evelyn Dooley, also wearing academic regalia (1:50). The seniors, who enter Dixon Hall, are followed by underclassmen wearing white attire. At this point (2:18), I believe that a second event starts to be filmed, because this action seems to be shot outside; one spectator holds an umbrella for shade, while others use their programs to shade their eyes. The audience is seated in wooden chairs; one noted spectator is Brandt von Blarcom Dixon (2:18), who served as the only president of Newcomb College, from 1886-1919.
