Side 1 and 2: Interview with Frederick Hamilton on 1982-09-07. Abstract for Hamilton: [00:26–31:19] Interviewed on September 7, 1982 Hamilton and Abbott discuss the style of the Golden Gates, distinguishing classical gospel quartet styles from what Hamilton calls "rhythmic spirituals" – 00:37. Hamilton goes on to speak about his time at Fisk University and the number of quartets that existed there in the 1940s – 04:40. He then speaks about Depression-era New Orleans and his time working to build roads for the WPA – 07:09. Reflecting on the hard gospel sound of quartet singing, Hamilton notes how the style was a way of "resisting change" – 12:56. He and Abbott go on to speak about gospel in New Orleans, noting overlooked singers such as Bessie Griffin, Mildred Brown, Gorgiana MacBride, and others who sang at St. Mark's Baptist Church – 14:17.
