Abstract for Lastie: [00:00–47:41] Speaking from his home in the Lower Ninth Ward on October 24, 1981, Frank Lastie describes the musical groups he organized in the neighborhood, the churches they played in, and the landscape of New Orleans at the time. He describes a short stint running pool games in Chicago in 1925, before returning to New Orleans to begin several musical groups – 04:51, naming Johnny and Joe McAllister as two singers in a quartet, as well as Willie Thomas, Reverend Terry, and B.B. Holland – 7:27. He goes on to talk about his past as a bookkeeper, hustler, gambler, and moonshiner, and how his baptism led to singing in quartets, naming the Young Men Christian Cooperative Club, and the Spiritual Circle – 08:18. He then speaks about Jubilee singing and demonstrates different methods of harmonizing – 13:54. He mentions being inspired by the Duncan Brothers and other local singers – 18:02, and describes the contests his quartets would compete in in the 1930s and 1940s – 20:39.
