Abstract for Walker and Smothers: [00:40–05:10] On LG012Goreau_Side2, Albertina Walker recalls a time she stayed with Mahalia Jackson in New York. She mentions how she and other members of Jackson's entourage were surprised at the luxury of the hotel and in particular the $5 ice cream scoops – 0:40. [05:13-30:11] In the next interview on LG012Gorea_Side2, Goreau and Smothers discuss the long car ride from Chicago to New York for Jackson's Carnegie Hall performance and how Jackson and Mildred Falls became very ill on the trip, with Falls having to be hospitalized – 6:07. Smothers and Goreau go on to discuss Jackson's surgeries for gallstones and to remove a tumor – 7:00. They discuss other illnesses that plagued Jackson throughout her life (including asthma, sinus and allergies) and how in spite of everything, "it never showed up in her voice when she sang" – 14:52. Smothers then describes the first time she accompanied Jackson on organ, which was at Carnegie Hall, and how she did so without ever having a rehearsal – 18:44.
