William explains how the African Americans worshipped and discusses the text of the sermon, in which the minister urged the former slaves to have patience, not to rely on the help from the North, and not to trust the Union soldiers. Smith also comments on the health of the Union soldiers, saying that their work is not bad and they are all gaining weight.
